Why most fire ant treatment methods fail
Fire ant colonies are not surface phenomena. The queen, reproductive caste, eggs, larvae, and pupae that constitute the reproductive core of the colony reside deep in an underground gallery system that typically extends 1.5 to 2 metres below the visible mound. The mound itself is primarily a temperature regulation structure — a solar collector that the colony uses to maintain optimal brood temperature during cooler periods.
Any treatment that targets only the surface — contact sprays, boiling water, petrol, consumer insecticides — kills foraging workers and surface ants but leaves the colony's reproductive core completely intact. Within hours of disturbance, the colony will seal its upper galleries, relocate the queen deeper in the system, and establish a new mound surface location nearby. The colony is displaced, not eliminated.
What happens
Contact-kill product kills surface workers. Colony detects disturbance. Queen is moved deeper. Galleries sealed. New mound established within metres of original site, often within 24 to 48 hours. Colony population recovers within weeks.

The science of Fipronil: slow-kill and transfer
Fipronil is specifically selected for fire ant treatment because of two properties that work synergistically: delayed action and transfer through colony behaviour.
Unlike rapid-kill insecticides that cause immediate paralysis and death on contact, Fipronil has a slower mode of action. It disrupts GABA-gated chloride channels in the insect's nervous system, causing a progressive neurological disruption over a period of hours to days. This delayed action is critical: it allows exposed worker ants to continue their normal colony activities — including feeding, grooming, and transferring food through trophallaxis — for long enough that the chemical spreads extensively through the colony before workers begin to die in significant numbers.
Trophallaxis — the sharing of liquid food and secretions between colony members through mouth-to-mouth contact — is the primary mechanism through which Fipronil propagates through the colony. Workers that have been exposed carry the chemical on their body and in their gut contents, transferring it to the queen, reproductive males, developing larvae, and other workers during normal colony feeding behaviour. The colony's own social biology becomes the vehicle for its elimination.
The direct nest injection procedure
Nest confirmation
The technician confirms the nest is active by observing the mound structure, ant activity, and characteristic fire ant behaviour. Photography of the nest and surrounding area is taken for Biosecurity Queensland reporting documentation.
Injection point preparation
A pressurised injection lance is introduced into the nest gallery system at multiple points around the mound perimeter at appropriate depths to penetrate the primary gallery network below the mound. The injection points are placed to maximise distribution of the product through the gallery system.
Product injection
APVMA-registered Fipronil formulation is injected under pressure at the correct concentration and volume for the nest size. The product distributes through the gallery system, coming into contact with worker ants in the tunnels. Workers carry the chemical back to the brood chambers and the queen.
Biosecurity documentation
Jets Pest Control prepares and lodges all mandatory Biosecurity Queensland reporting documentation, including chemical application records, photographic evidence of the nest before and after treatment, and the GPS location of the treatment site. This documentation is provided to the client and lodged with the state's fire ant tracking system.
Follow-up assessment
The nest site is reassessed after the treatment period. A successfully treated nest will show complete absence of live ant activity. If a colony has relocated or a new mound has established in proximity, a follow-up treatment may be required.
Why the 24-hour reporting obligation matters
Under the Biosecurity Act 2014, any person who suspects they have found a fire ant nest in Queensland must report it to Biosecurity Queensland within 24 hours via 13 22 68. This obligation applies regardless of whether the property is within a declared biosecurity zone. New detections outside existing zones trigger rapid response from Biosecurity Queensland and are critical to the eradication program's containment strategy.
